Customizable Mobile App for Clinical Trials

We designed a customizable mobile app using a scalable library of components to lower development costs and improve client retention.

The Problem

In most clinical trial bids that the company won, the sponsors would decide to run paper trials rather than choosing to use a mobile app due to the cost. This would mean that only a small percentage of contracts would get mobile apps and therefore our product was overall less valuable. Previous to me joining the company, each app was built separately and always used a different image, typeface, icons, etc., which is part of what would keep the cost so high.

The Solution

When I pitched the idea of building a customizable mobile app with a scalable library of components, I did so with the intention of having the least amount of customizations possible while still having a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing application. This would improve the cost for the company, we would be able to offer this service to the sponsors at a more reasonable price (helping gain more business and trust), the participants would have a better tool and the sponsors would get more accurate and compliant data.

Research & Discovery

The design team did intensive research on accessibility, new trends, timeless designs, user testing, but intentionally looked up different kinds of diseases and trials in order to come up with the best design possible that would fit every need.

Reflections

This project not only had a positive return of investment and a way for the company to have more business, but it also was a trust exercise because it was breaking away from how they had always done things and it was scary for them in the beginning.
